Content Description

Large collection of 91 small format photographs depicting activities of the 102nd Battalion of the Army Corps of Engineers while stationed at Camp Wadsworth during World War I. A few of the images may depict activities at Fort McAllen, Texas in 1916. A few of the images include the photographer's stamp for P. E. Witte of Spartanburg, SC.

Content Description The Gas Attack magazine was the official publication of the 27th infantry division when it trained at Camp Wadsworth. This collection consists of a complete run of all 26 issues of the Gas Attack magazine. There were 24 regular issues that ran from November 23, 1917 to May 4, 1918. Two additional issues were published for Christmas 1918 and when the division returned home in March 1919. Joseph Nohra was a soldier stationed at Camp Croft during World War II. This collection consists of twenty photographs that Nohra acquired during his time in service. Twelve are reprinted photos depicting soldiers in Spartanburg and training at Camp Croft during World War II. One notable image shows the "Spartanburg Fair Negro Entrance." Eight of the photos were taken overseas depicting soldiers on parade, captured German planes and tanks.

Content Description The Summers family was an African-American family that grew up in Orangeburg, SC. The Rev. James A. and Rebecca Summers had Leona, James, Lucille, and Margaret. James Jr. was a solider stationed at Camp Croft during World War II and Lucille was a teacher in Spartanburg in the 40s. Leona was a teacher at Cummings Street School and Carver High School for many years. This collection consists of three letters written to Leona.
