William T. Russel surgical notes and kit

Content Description

Two items: a booklet listing and describing battlefield surgeries undertaken by William T. Russel between 1862 and 1865 while with the Holcombe Legion and a small case containing six ivory-handled surgical instruments, two needles, and a small lancet (?). Both are contemporary to Russel's work as a surgeon in the Holcombe Legion.

The Williams family owned and operated a farm in the Glenn Springs area of Spartanburg County. These papers cover the family's operations over four generations with papers focusing on the heads of the households.
