Biographical / Historical
Ira B. Tucker was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina in 1925. In 1938 Tucker auditioned and became a lead singer with the gospel group, The Dixie Hummingbirds. Originally based in Greenville, South Carolina, the group relocated first to Washington, D.C., and later to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Tucker remained a member of the group until his death in 2008 and is remembered by audiences for his giant vocal range and for his theatrics, such as jumping off stages, running the aisles, and falling to his knees in prayer. Although the group’s style and members have changed over the years, The Dixie Hummingbirds are still making music.
