Biography
A native of Spartanburg County, Richard Gist was born in 1921 and was the son of Joseph and Mariah Littlejohn Gist. In 1943 Gist was drafted into the United States Army, where he would serve for twenty-five years. During World War II, Gist was sent to Italy. After the war was over, he re-enlisted and was sent to Germany where he was made the first sergeant of a National Guard unit. He retired from the service in 1962 and opened an upholstery business in Cowpens. In 1967 Gist re-enlisted and served in Vietnam where he earned a Purple Heart. Gist was the husband of Christabell Houge Gist and he died in 2004.
