Gamewell, Joseph Augustus

Joseph Augustus Gamewell was born in Rutherford County, North Carolina in 1850. He first came to Spartanburg in 1866 to attend Wofford Preparatory School and enrolled in Wofford College in 1867. Gamewell graduated from Wofford in in 1871 and moved to Kentucky where he taught at a private school for boys. In 1875 he returned to Wofford College to teach and he remained there as a Latin professor until 1939. Before his death in July 1940, Gamewell was reported to be the oldest active professor in the United States.
