Biography
James H. Carlisle was born in Winnsboro, South Carolina in 1825. He was the son of William Carlisle and Mary Ann Buchanan, both of Ireland. He received his early education from Mt. Zion Academy in Winnsboro and was a graduate of South Carolina College, now the University of South Carolina. Carlisle was professor of mathematics at Wofford College from 1854-1875. He also occasionally taught astronomy, civics, ethics, and the Bible. He was elected president of Wofford College in 1875 and served until 1902. He died in 1909.
