Dr. Gary Burgess is the son of Edward and Willean Burgess and a native of Spartanburg County. He received his bachelor’s degree from Wofford College, his master’s degree in education from Converse College, and a doctorate from the University of South Carolina. He has taught geography at Dorman High School, been employed as assistant principal at Byrnes High School, and as principal of Whitlock Junior High and D.R. Hill Middle School. He also served as pastor of Universal Body of Christ Church. In 1999 he left the Spartanburg County school system to serve as principal of Pendleton High School.
