Donald Beatty was elected chief justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court in 2016. He is the second African American to be elected to the office since Reconstruction. He is also the second chief justice to serve from Spartanburg County. Beatty is a native of Spartanburg and grew up in Tobe Hartwell. In addition to practicing law in the community, he has also served on the Spartanburg City Council and in the South Carolina House of Representatives.
