Biography
Harry M. Arthur was born in Union County, South Carolina in 1899. He was the son of Joseph Dogan Arthur and Alice Elizabeth Moore. Arthur was a 1921 graduate of The Citadel and retired as a major general from the United States Army Reserve. Upon graduation, Arthur returned to Union and opened Arthur’s Stores, which eventually expanded to additional locations in Pacolet, Jonesville, Lockhart, Camden and Cheraw. When the Great Depression left Union County without a financial institution, Arthur decided to open his own bank. Originally known as Arthur’s Depository, the bank was later renamed Arthur State Bank and now boasts several locations across the Upstate of South Carolina. Arthur was a World War I and World War II veteran and died in February 1988.
