Biography
Warren H. Abernathy (1924-2009) was a civil servant who spent most of his life working for Strom Thurmond. Abernathy was a native of Spartanburg and was born to George and Effie Hines Abernathy. He graduated from Spartanburg High School, attended Wofford College, and graduated from Spartanburg Methodist College and the University of South Carolina before getting a master’s in business administration from Command and General Staff College. He was a World War II veteran, retiring as a colonel in the reserves.
Abernathy began working for Thurmond in the 1940s after being introduced by SC Supreme Court Chief Justice Bruce Littlejohn. Often called Thurmond’s right-hand man over his almost fifty years of working for him, Abernathy served as his state manager, oversaw four offices, and as secretary-treasurer of the Strom Thurmond Foundation. Highway 29 was renamed in honor of Abernathy in 1997 and he was awarded the Order of the Palmetto in 1998.
