Correspondence, deeds, receipts, and other papers inherited by Edna Verner Smith from Enoch Ham Smith and later given to Cleora Koon Smith and her son, Robert Jesse Smith. The papers range from the 1820s to the 1890s, when the Smith family lived in the Pauline and Glenn Springs area of Spartanburg County. An electronic file containing a detailed family chart, originally hand-drawn by Cleora Smith, is included in the collection.

These papers had been stored in the bottom drawer of a secretary by the collection's creator. A later generation was told that the drawer housed important papers that should not be touched and decades passed before the drawer was even opened. They were rehoused and organized in the 1970s by Cleora Koon Smith, who later gave them to her son, Robert Jesse Smith.
